SPHRS Members remember

Joe:

"He was passionate about history and one of the kindest persons I've ever known."

"Joe was a trip. Quiet at times, give you the shirt off his back to help you."

"For me he was always a good listener and a good talker. He was like another grandfather for me."

"Joe Jacobs was a tremendous guy, and everyone in the 49th had true friend. We were at Averysboro one year and we had to march a pretty good distance away from the battlefield before we even got into the fight. Another member in the unit who had been feeling bad became overheated and had to drop out on the way back to camp. Being a cop and having some medical training; I volunteered to stay with him as we made our way slowly back to camp. Joe saw that we were falling behind and dropped back with us. Joe even carried my rifle as I carried all of the other person's equipment. When we got back to camp Joe made sure the other guy was okay; and even went and got his dinner for him. Later that night I found Joe on "fire watch"; as he took the sick guys place !!!!  What a guy!"

"I never knew Joe.  He had passed before I joined SPHRS.  I'm sorry I didn't get to know him!  In 2009, I was very honored to receive the "Joe Jacob" Award from SPHRS."

"People remain in our lives as long as we remember the great things they achieved while here. Joe was the epitomy of the expression, "Gentle Giant"!  Always there to help with whatever was needed.  He was a true Christian in the purest sense of the word.  I mean he lived Christianity!  I really miss him."

"Joe Jacobs was not just another fellow reenactor, he was a good man, a friend, a co-worker, and a second father to me.   Joe and Phyllis (Mom) and I joined the 49th together in the summer of 1995, our first event was at Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC, which after that we went on many of reenacting adventures together.  We mostly rode together to events and he would have to get on me and "Mom" because we were always picking on each other and he would tell us that you children behave yourselves, all the while laughing so hard he had to wipe the tears from his eyes so he see where he was driving.

SPHRS was a second family to Joe and Mom.  Joe was a type of man that you always knew where he stood.  He loved his family and the members of the 49th NCT.   He was always lending a helping hand to anyone that was having trouble with equipment or setting up their tent.  He will always be missed in the formation and in camp but he has left us with some fond memories.  We all know that Joe has crossed over the river and is resting under the shade of the trees."

"As a songbird that is fallen"

"Paths are there for us to follow, this is gospel I believe
Angels are around us flying, truth and mercy to receive.
Pictures of uncommon nature, painted by a masters hand
Draw me ever on life's journey, rendered thus to understand.

As a songbird that is fallen, only to regain the sky,
from this frozen shadow valley they must be revived.

Love is from no distance calling, faithful as the rising sun
Warms the bitter heart and heartache till the east of eden's gone.
Clouds of fear and misconception, wax and wane as if the moon
So is in a sense forsaken, till the will of God be known.

As a songbird that is fallen, only to regain the sky,
from this frozen shadow valley they must be revived."
